Kimburu is a cattery breeding the beautiful bengal and the rare sokoke. I'm a fresh breeder and hope to have my first litters in early 2003. I own 5 beautiful bengals and 4 wonderful sokokes, and 3 Kenyan Sokokes. Two of my bengals are still living with their breeder..

The Beginning....

When I first decided to buy a purebred cat I didn't know much about the different breeds. I'd always just had a moogie named Pussy. She became 13 years old and hated other cats. But she was the sweetest, kindest, calmest most cuddling and lovable cat ever. She was quite beautiful too in her shining black coat with pure white underbelly, chest and socks on her feet.

To find information about different cat breeds I searched the internett for information about almost every shorthaired breed available. One lucky day I stumbled across a breed named sokoke. I totally fell for that breed. I loved it's history, personality and appearance. The sokoke is an African cat from Kenya. It comes from the Arabuko Sokoke forest , where the sokoke cats has lived for generations without human interaction. Almost every kitten in this breed is given a name in swahili..

Some time later I read about the bengal in a cats magazine. I was totally lost to the cat in the article. His personality and what a BEAUTIFUL cat. I had never seen such a beautiful cat before. After reading a lot more about the bengal and seen hundreds of photos, I decided I could just as well have two different breed - Sokoke and Bengal.

The name Kimburu

When the time came and I was about to find a name to my cattery I wanted it to go with both my breeds. I also wanted it to say something about my breeds. In addition I didn't want another breeder to be named almost the same. I wanted it to be different, short and easy to remember.

My chose fell on kimburu. Kimburu is a swahili word meaning "half wild cat" and is also used about the African wildcat (Felis lybica). I think this name goes very well with both my breeds. The sokoke coming from Kenya and having lived for generations without human help is some sort of a "half wild cat". The bengal which is meant to look wild but not act like it is also some sort of a "half wild cat". The appearance of a wildcat - but not the act.

This is how I came up with my cattery name.

A little something about me...

I'm a student in zoological ecology at the University of Bergen. I just started on my masters in osteology (about bones). My assignment is to try to find out something about the housecat's (Felis silvestris catus) earliest history in Norway. I do so with studying the bones from housecats found in three Norwegian towns. Most of the bones are from the medieval ages.
Besides my cats I own a dog, a Siberian Husky named Esky. He's the most wonderful dog :-) When I've finished my studies I might buy another Siberian Husky.
